on October 9 (distributed by Fox), the VISION KINO network (with support from the Culture Ministry, FFA and Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg) and Matthias Film are organising the early release of a DVD containing educational material about the film aimed at schoolchildren.

The film by 30-year-old director Marco Kreuzpaintner (Welcome to America) is produced by Claussen + Wöbke + Putz Filmproduktion GmbH and tells the story of a young apprentice (David Kross starring alongside Christian Redl and Daniel Brühl) in a mill where he also learns about black magic. The title is adapted from a cult novel by Otfried Preußler (2.1m copies sold worldwide), which guarantees the appeal and success of the project.

The educational DVD accompanies a film screening attended by teachers who are thus better prepared to discuss and analyse the film’s contents with their pupils. Having noticed the interest films arouse in schools, VISION KINO director Sarah Duve believes they must attract this audience into theatres and discuss the fascinating ways of integrating film into the school curriculum.

The DVD accompanying Krabat is comprehensive: it includes thematic, aesthetic and historical studies, draws parallels with other cinematic and literary works and features interviews, screenplay extracts, Making Ofs and other materials about the film itself.

VISION KINO produced a similar DVD for Dominik Graf’s The Red Cockatoo as part of the initiative "Film meets school".
