BERLINALE 2013 Market

Alpha Violet hedges its bets on So Much Water

- The young Parisian international sales agency is to sell a film co-produced by the Netherlands to make its world premiere in the Panorama section

What is worse than being 14 years old and on holiday with your father? Taking your children on holiday under never-ending rain. So goes the pitch for Ana Guevara and Leticia Jorge's So Much Water to make its world premiere in the Panorama section at the 63rd Berlinale(from February 7 to 17, 2013). Co-produced by Uruguay (Control Z Films), the Netherlands (Topkapi Films), and Mexico (Bonita Films), this first feature that is supported by the Hubert Bals Fund and has already received three "work in progress" prizes (in Toulouse - the Cicae/Europa distribution prize-, in San Sebastian - Cine en Construcción - and in Cuba), is to be sold internationally at the European Film Market by French agency Alpha Violet.

Launched at the last Berlinale, Alpha Violet (managed by Virginie Devesa and Keiko Funato) has concluded a successful first year at film markets, notably by selling Spanish director Antonio de Méndez Esparza's Here and There in Cannes, where the film won the Grand Prix at the Critics' Week. The Parisian outfit is now hedging its bets on the subtle humour of So Much Water. Starring Néstor Guzzini, Malù Chouza, and Joaquin Castiglioni, the film (whose screenplay was penned by its two directors) centres on Alberto, a father who, since his divorce, has spent little time with his children Lucía and Federico. One thunderous morning, all three set off for some thermal springs. The holiday is to be short and they want to make the best of it, especially the enthusiastic Alberto who hopes that nothing will foil his plans. But the thermal baths are closed until further notice and, as his children give his reproachful looks, Albert reacts in a split second and flies off the handle. Soon, everybody's nerves are on edge, as the humidity becomes increasingly sticky. Rain continues to fall, as the house rented by Alberto seems to be shrinking by the hour…

The Dutch production company that co-produced So Much Water, Topkapi Films, also recently produced Guido van Drie's The Resurrection of a Bastard to open the next Rotterdam Film Festival (from January 23 to February 3, 2013), and also co-produced another title that has also been selected for the 2013 Berlinale Panorama section: Belgian director Felix van Groeningen's The Broken Circle Breakdown.
