Lisa Ohlin’s Simon and the Oaks starts filming

Göta Film’s ambitious European co-production Simon and the Oaks, based on Marianne Fredriksson’s best-selling eponymous novel, has started filming in Sweden.

The drama directed by Lisa Ohlin centres on a young boy, Simon, as he grows up in Sweden during WW2. He befriends the Jewish boy Isak and learns that he is adopted. The film explores the antithesis of fate and destiny versus free will.

Bill Skarsgård (Arn: The Knight Templar [+see also:

) stars as Simon in a cast that includes Helen Sjöholm, Stefan Gödicke and Jan Josef Liefers (The Baader Meinhof Complex [+see also:

Filming takes place between Göteborg, Trollhättan, Orust, Uddevalla, Berlin and Hamburg. Simon is produced by Christer Nilsson for Göta Film, in co-production with Norway’s Filmkameratene, Denmark’s Asta Film, Holland’s Flinck Film and Germany’s Schmidtz Katze Filmkollektiv, with support from Film i Väst, SVT, the Swedish Film Institute and Nordisk Film & TV Fond.

The domestic premiere is scheduled for spring 2011.
