Toronto: Gianni Amelio’s Premier homme wins Critics Award

by Gianni Amelio (pictured) has won the first Fipresci Prize, awarded by international critics, at the Toronto Film Festival, in the Special Presentations section - its absence from the selection at the Venice Film Festival had raised complaints.

"I’m really pleased, because with Il primo uomo I immersed myself in a culture that isn’t mine, I filmed in French and the prize comes from a jury that consists mainly of Anglophones at a festival where North American cinema prevails," Gianni Amelio said.

Based on Albert Camus’ last unfinished novel, the film is a co-production between France, Algeria and Italy (Rai Cinema e Cattleya). Starring Jacques Gamblin, Catherine Sola, Denis Podalydes, Maya Sansa and Ulla Baugué, it will be distributed in Italy by 01 Distribution.
